In the case of 1.12 packs, the one that I tried (ATM3) was bugged as f$#$#. Play whatever modpack you think sounds the most fun or interesting. I honestly don't think MC version matters at all. I'm not pushing anyone to do anything, but the fact is 1.7.10 modpacks are still superior to any of the more recent versions of MC. The one thing I didn't like about this season is Thermal Expansion and Dynamics came out so late in the cycle he introduced them pretty late-game - but I still highly recommend this avenue.If you have your heart set on Beyond, Welsknight and Hypnotizd had pretty good playthroughs of that one you can play along with if that's your preferred learning style. The biggest thing the DW20 pack has going for it is that you can follow along with his let's play as a really long tutorial.

Beyond garnered a bad reputation for reasons which don't apply anymoore and really matter to you right now, but Beyond and DW20 are wonderful packs to start learning on.Honestly, they mostly overlap at this point.
